World Languages
Latin
Students in the Middle School take Latin I and II. Students in both courses will learn the basic concepts of the Latin language which include vocabulary, noun declensions, verb conjugations, and syntax necessary for translating simple stories about Roman mythology, history, and civilization. The course emphasizes building a rich English vocabulary through extensive derivative work and learning of the commonly used Latin words, phrases, and mottoes. Latin supports student learning in many other subjects such as English, modern languages, law and science.
Spanish
he Upper School offers a three course sequence in Spanish. Spanish I introduces the student to the basic elements of the Spanish language and culture. This course forms the foundation of oral and written skills, while utilizing a vocabulary that is of interest to the student. It delves into the Hispanic culture and its contributions to the mosaic of American culture. Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I with emphasis on improving oral and written skills. It investigates the history and culture of the Caribbean, South America, and Africa and helps students take a closer look at Spanish speaking citizens in the community. Spanish III is a continuation of Spanish I and II with emphasis on perfecting oral and written skills, while exploring the historical aspects of the culture and history of Spanish speaking countries in Africa and in the Philippines. It provides a bridge to college courses since it expands and allows for the attainment of oral
proficiency and usage of most grammatical concepts and allows students to interact with our local community to help Spanish speaking residents fight for equality.
